Good Night And Good Luck

Post: # 29675Post 19&41 »

An hour long broadcast farewell to the CBS Radio Network. I listtened to it on WSB. There was the first quarter of the program, then the second quarter, then the third quarter. Then there was the third quarter. "That's All Folks!

Wasn't the title of this topic the sign-off blurb by Edward R. Murrow? :?: :?:

What happened to the Mutual Broadcasting that Paul Harvey and Earl Nightingale were members of?

That was Murrow's sign-off. George Clooney made an excellent movie about Murrow with the same title.

He is also credited with helping to disgrace Sen. Joseph McCarthy. First came a heroic member of my profession who talked back to McCarthy, a notorious bully, during televised hearings. I always remember his words:

"If it were in my power to forgive you for your reckless cruelty, I would do so. I like to think I am a gentleman, but your forgiveness will have to come from someone other than me.”

When McCarthy tried to renew his attack, Welch interrupted him:

Senator, may we not drop this? We know he belonged to the Lawyers Guild. Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
