Shipping costs are ridiculous

Post: # 17351Post electra225 »

I hate shipping costs and try to avoid them. I do without rather than paying shipping. Unreasonable sometimes, I know. I mailed a small box of light stuff via the USPS and it was almost fifteen bucks! The small mailing boxes that used to be $2.85 are now almost ten bucks! Five dollar diesel fuel doesn't help, but some of this is just plain gouging. Have any of you guys tried those outfits you see advertised offering cheaper shipping? The ones where you can load an app on your phone and "save hundreds"...... ;)

When I was restoring cars, customers would balk at big shipping charges. Our favorite yard in California gave us a pretty good discount on parts. So if a fender was $65, I would double that for my "taste" to $130. If they wanted $25 shipping, a common charge back then, I would price the fender to the customer at $150, then add the remaining $10 to the labor on something. This way there would be no shipping charge for that item appearing on their statement. In the rare instance where our yard in California didn't have what we needed, I would notify the customer and let them know up front that I had to get the part elsewhere and it would have to be truck freighted in. That there would be a charge of a certain amount for shipping. That worked okay as well. Art taught me to avoid shipping when I could, and to "bury it" when I couldn't avoid it altogether. More than once I have rented a U-Haul van and made the trip to the California yard myself in order to avoid truck freight charges. Typical freight charges to ship a crated engine was $300 even back then. I could make the trip to California myself and bury the cost in the job without a separate charge for shipping.
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison
