Polk RM2300

I had to visit a friend's house to look at a deed affecting a local nonprofit's operation... took the rail trail to his house, on the bike. As I rode down my alley, I passed two small stand-mounted speakers in the trash position. When I came home they were still there so I grabbed 'em. Two Polk 2300 speakers, little guys intended as satellites in a 5.1 system. They've in very heavy, solid cast (some sort of resin product, I think) enclosures. Haven't tried them yet beyond touching leads to a 1.5V cell. They both make a noise. It's now late at night so I may delay listening until the weekend.

There were two extra stands there so I just went back snagged those too.

I'm sitting here listening to Thelonius Monk with John Coltrane, a 1957 Carnegie Hall performance taped for Willis Conover (hero) to play on his VOA jazz program. The little speakers are hooked up to a tiny Radio Shack integrated amp and the source is my iPod via the headphone jack. The speakers sound pretty good. I'm tickled that they work at all. For the price I paid, I would not have been surprised if the voice coils had been burned up. But no, seems like the neighbors just didn't want them. I will say they are not bass-heavy. They were intended for use with a subwoofer and the LF driver is tiny, 3", and the whole enclosure is 7"x 4"x 4-1/2". They have pretty well balanced sound nonetheless, even with a flea-powered amp. I've got a Marantz 2270 here but did not want to connect unknown speakers to a really nice amp.
