My Sylvania story

Post: # 15237Post electra225 »

So as not to hijack the topic on Sylvania stereos, I thought I'd share my Sylvania story.

My grandfather was one of ten kids. He had four half-siblings and five full siblings. Grandpa's dad's first wife died in childbirth in 1896. He married grandpa's mother as a German mail order bride. Aunt Helen was the oldest of the kids. She was a maiden lady, and took care of her parents until they both passed. She sort of squatted in the house she was born in and lived there until she passed. She never held a job outside of her home. She was a hard worker and specialized in chocolate chip cookies on lawn mowing day. She was a neat old lady, but was tight. She'd make Jack Benny look like a spendthrift..... ;)

Aunt Helen had a Sylvania "Halo Glow" TV set. One of those that the outside of the front of the TV lit up. Something went the matter with the high voltage in her TV. She had no picture, the screen was dark. Cousin Calvin wanted almost $4 to fix it, but Aunt Helen wasn't getting off that kind of money. So she sat with her back to the TV. She could listen to her "stories" and Art Linkletter. One can only imagine what damage was done to the set running it with no high voltage. She ran it like that for years. I don't know what happened to that old TV when she died.
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison

When I'm doing something around the house, I also get by listening to the TV audio. I can even have TCM on and name most any actor or actress in the films. I can do it with the older TV programs too. It's entertaining taking a break, going to watch and seeing how many I got right.
