my 25 dollar pioneer 707 died

Post: # 12335Post hermitcrab »

It was bound to happen.... 40+ years of aging components....I was recording some music, all the meters swinging fine, even listening thru the monitor switch it sounded great ... playback the tape and it barely erased the old content and the new content was very low... I guess it has to be in the oscillator or record circuit as it still plays back other tapes fine ... I posted on tapeheads and they all say it is not the caps that go bad in these but there's a certain transistor in this unit that is famous for failing 2SC1344... they recommend not changing any caps but every transistor with that number... I guess there are like 10 of them all over the deck... but on the bright side it is easier to locate a bad transistor over a leaky cap anyday... but this it will get put in line with all the other projects....I still got the Teac playing fine and can take over the recording duties until that one starts to fail... :D

That was a popular model back in the day. I always wanted one, but could never afford it. ;)

Are they surface mount components or the real thing?

No surface mount crap in this one ... all regular components that was normal for the 70's
