Electrohome/Dominion stereo

Post: # 9945Post William »

I ran across this console on Craig's list this morning as I was wasting some time. I have heard of Electrohome, but never knew Dominion was involved. I always thought Dominion made kitchen appliances. It must be fairly upscale if it is using a Dual changer, but it has a ceramic cartridge. It's still a nice-looking unit and probably sounds halfway decent.

Looks like a nice made in canada unit, but I see only 2 output transistors which means it is a single ended unit... about par with the little VM I picked up 3 - 5 watts ?

I noticed that too, but they look like beefer transistors and have big heat sinks. I was surprised that the speakers were only a 2-way system and 10" woofers. All in all, it's a nice-looking unit.

My uncle had an Electrohome TV back in the 1960's. It was a 19" TV that sat on a cart. He used that thing for years. I think Electrohome was like a GE here, wasn't it?

I'm not sure, but I think Electrohome is the parent company of Clairtone and I believe that was a high-end Canadian brand.

The hang tag says "22 watts peak music power." PMP is a fanciful measurement, the sort of hog wash that led the FTC to impose a trade regulation rule about how wattage could be stated and how it was to be measured. But then, the same tag says that the FM tuner has 4 gangs in the tuning cap and the AM tuner has 3, so the tuner is a fairly high performance device as such things go. Many high-performance speakers are two-way devices; adding speakers does not mean better sound. It can mean worse, actually. And it's sure a good-looking device.
