Queen Elizabeth II passes
Queen Elizabeth II of England passed away this morning, aged 96.

Re: Queen Elizabeth II passes
Monarch since I was 2, a dignified symbol and representative of England in a peerless manner for over 70 years, she will be missed by people the world over. The 2 Elizabeths have been perhaps the 2 greatest monarchs in English history. Godspeed and RIP ma'am. May Charles the III be 1/2 as great... God Save the King!
A few years back PBS's Masterpiece aired "Charles III" a fictional play, being an account of Prince Charles assuming the monarchy as Charles III upon Elizabeth II's passing, then being overthrown by William for being unwilling to restrict press freedom and other rear-guard compromises desired by powers that-be. After refusing to back down on his principles, they conclude he must be removed from power, William and Catherine being the main co-conspirators. The part of Charles was played brilliantly by Tim Piggot-Smith, who ironically died in real life very shortly after playing the part, before it was even aired on TV. Highly recommended if you can find it online.

God bless the queen...
Just missed seeing her in May. London was prepping for the Jubilee. Sad how quickly life changes.

Queen Elizabeth was the rare not-so-tarnished royal class act.

Re: Queen Elizabeth II passes
My parents bought a little tabletop radio-phono (used) for me and my siblings to play kiddie 7" 78s on. It's an LC-628 (1942), a 6-tube tuned-RF radio and single-play 78 rpm turntable with no retractor for the idler wheel (bump-bump-bump...). Maybe that should be this winter restoration project.
The Queen's coronation was 4 days before my sixth birthday. Not many precise memories from that age, but I have a vague recollection of hearing the coronation, or news of it, on that radio. It was an important event, even over here in the colonies.
She served in a unique role with great dignity, devotion, and perseverance. I'm fond of all 3 of those qualities, even if I can't always model them myself. Maybe perseverance--I'm 75 and still working because, "deleted", it's important to be useful. Most of us have some choice about careers and lifestyles; she didn't. But she accepted her fate and made a great success of it. She also seemed to radiate a sense of happiness and kindness. We're in an age when there are lots of well positioned jerks and gasbags around us. They make the dignified, solid people seem all the more important.

Re: Queen Elizabeth II passes
She was made for the job. I believe fate played a hand in her becoming Queen. Had her uncle not abdicated (who was linked to Hitler), our entire world could be different today. King George and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, led Britain through the war with bravery, never leaving. Their example of duty to country helped mold this girl into the force she was.
One thing I noticed, and maybe it was because of the jubilee, Britains are proud people who truly love and care for their country and traditions. I hope that continues with her gone.

I was listening to the service from London on NPR today, this was a major world event!
I'm so glad WVIA-WITF-WHYY-WYPR-WESA-WPSU-WQLN-WSKG simulcasts BBC, the other news on NPR has become desultory and repeating, except for locally-produced "Radio PA" inserts IMAO
I started listening on my long commutes 35 years ago, it seemed non-biased then but not anymore
The King (K-C) will usher in a new era for Britain, along with the PM change and I cant wait for the inevitable cartoons. If only Diana would have hung in there with the crew - LOL

Re: Queen Elizabeth II passes
Here's a man who was born in the shadow of his parents, and his own father, publicly, had to walk a step behind...
Today, the torch was passed. He's not just the new king, he's a grieving son... in public... I lost my dad in March and have moments that set me off. He doesn't have that luxury.
I've dealt with a lot of families over the years but never anything like this. And, yes, I went through my dad's funeral like a robot. I can empathize with this man.
But this is his time. If his country embraces him like they did his mum then all will be fine.
Imagine a public figure in our country doing what he did today... and walking among throngs of the public... I hope England appreciates what they have...
It's "Revolutionary". Or Evolutionary.

See if you can find "Last Night at the Proms" on YouTube. It's the final night of the famous summer concerts at Albert Hall. At the very end that play "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Jerusalem," and all 5,000 Brits are singing along. Then they bellow their approval. It's hair-raising.
