Re: Grant's ?
W.T. Grant was a five and dime store. I had a Grantline radio for a time, late 1930's, as I recall. IT was built by Wells-Grardner. There were equivelants in other store brands with the same chassis as the one I had. Truetone, Firestone, Coronado and maybe others. The one I had was an eight-tube, three-band model with an eye tube and a 12" speaker. It was a good, unrestored performer at the time (late 1970's) but the cabinet did not turn me on, so I sold it. The stereo you posted looks to have a VM changer. I would not hazard a guess as to who may have built it. It is a nice looking stereo, though. Thanks for sharing.
Bradford was another brand that I think was sold by Grant's.

Good link. I've been hearing references to the W.T. Grant Foundation on the radio for years and somehow never made the connection.electra225 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 11:09 pm A bit of history:

That is a good-looking unit, Elton. The cabinet looks to be all wood and the tuner more deluxe. That is a VM changer, one of their later more deluxe looking models.

They sold creditable TV and Audio equipment under the Bradford brand. My folks had a 3 pc stereo and a solid state console TV from them. The TV lasted about 15 years.

I have always thought Grant's was like Gamble's. Grant's was more city and Gamble's was more small town. The Gamble Store here in Hart was the largest both in size and volume of business of all independently owned Gamble stores. We moved a ton of stuff thru that store, and I loved every minute of it.

I always thought Gambles was more like Western Auto. Grant's was like S.S Kresge or Ben Franklin stores. IT may depend on the individual store and subject to memory, faulty or otherwise.

I guess you are correct, Gambles and Western Auto were very similar. Actually, Sears follows into that category too. Did Grant's sell appliances?

Re: Grant's ?
Grant's was a department store in it's final form in the mid to late '70s. They had about a Sears or Montgomery Ward store of that period had. There were just too many similar stores of the type and in the early '80s they began dropping like flies. They had a store in Marion Indiana near my home town that remodeled and expanded around 1980, then closed after a few months.
