I always found the General Electric Porta-fi interesting. This is a nice-looking unit, but kind of pricey for not working.

Re: GE stereo
I have that changer as a stand-alone unit. Mine has an Astatic magnetic cartridge. A man I worked for gave me a stereo quite similar to this one. They are not very good. Early solid state, not very well made, not a good performer. Worth buying cheap for the changer and speakers.

Re: GE stereo
Sorry , but a modern GE like that is nowhere worth that amount no matter how good the cabinet is ... if I was buying to restore , I would give no more than 100 bucks ... and even then would think real hard about it...reminds me of the complete GE console with R2R that was not operating ... guy wanted 400 bucks... I offered him 150 ... he turned it down , then asked for my number to negotiate the price , I told him ny price was set in stone ... never heard from him until 2 weeks later , he left me a text saying he reconsidered my offer and would take it .... I never replied back to him...ya snooze ... ya lose ...
Re: GE stereo
Those GE consoles will certainly blow the walls down when they're working properly, but they're no fun to work on.
GE has a knack for getting amazing perfomance from a minimum of components and cost, and these sets have not aged well. Those rocker switches, and the pots, are always troublesome on thsee sets. Again, when up to snuff, these sets are capable of being heard at least a block away.

Re: GE stereo
I agree that GE got a lot of performance out of a minimum of components, particularly in the tube days. The GE solid state stereo I had wouldn't blow out a match, much less blow down a wall. You might have been able to hear it down the block, but it would have sounded as bad as it did up close. I was not impressed. I still have the turntable and speakers out of it.
