1958 Magnavox consolette

[Hi-Fi-Mogul]

Hi all,
I saw this little Maggie listed on CL for $25.00.
I knew that had to be incorrect.
It was also located only 4 miles from me....

I called and a nice older lady said, right...$25.00.
A buddy w/a truck went today and picked it up
for me.

It has the Amp-151CB in it with a very nice
PT and OPT.
Two 6x9 speakers plus a 5 inch w/cap crossover.

The Collaro looks so clean from underneath.
That might just be a tease, ha ha !

Record storage for albums and 45's !

Okay, the house is full, and that new easy open
garage door may be my downfall.

That's a nice looking unit, and one I have never seen in any of the brochures. The only thing better than $25.00, would have been free. Nice find, Mr. Mogul.

That amp chassis looks suspiciously like the amp chassis they used in the early Concert Grand instruments to make the tape deck stereo. It is a cute little rig, though.

The amp chassis in the early CG's used a 6X4 rectifier, I just discovered.

Wonder what the hole with the screen over it, above the amp chassis, is for?

Mr. Mogul. Did you clean it, or did it come that way. It looks like the inside was dusted every week like all the furniture would have been. What are the four holes for by the one with the screen?

I think the screened hole is for:
1. Ventilation
2. Keep kiddies' hands from reaching in
around hot tubes.

1. This Maggie lady came from a very nice house
apparently, from what my friend said
when he picked her up. Almost new condition.

2. I too, wondered what the 4 inserts were for.
Possibly Magnavox was using some pre-fab
panels here and there on different model
cabinets ?

There are 3 of those inserts that the separate
wired Vol, Bass, and Treble controls are mounted
on.

I think this unit is electronically very close to the small
Symphonettes that came in 2 styles as I remember.

This is of course the "Danish Modern" style, and I really
like the little sliding door across the record storage
compartment.

A little research and I came up with it's in the 1957 brochure. It was called "The New Horizon" and sold for $169.50. If I can figure out how to get that page posted I will do it. So far, it has not worked.

Interesting that it has that side hole, us two holes in the bottom under the amp, while it appears to be an open-back device (as most were then). In other words, it didn't really need more ventilation. I wonder if Magnavox used the holes as speaker-tuning devices, to get the sound they wanted?

The rear panel was removed for the photo.
There are 2 small areas of perforation in the
panel for ventilation.

Magnavox was notorious for building "hot" cabinets, ones with inadequate ventilation. They would mount the Multiplex adapter in an area typically on top of the output tubes. The changer compartment would typically get warm enough to bake bread. They put a shelf under the record changer, either to protect the changer from the vibration of the speakers or to shield heat from the changer. All I ever knew they accomplished by doing that was to make the changer harder to service. The only Magnavox stereo I have with adequate ventilation is the Symphony. Not perfect, but not bad, and miles better than some of the others, particularly the Imperial.

I will eventually drill out more holes
in the rear cover for escape venting.

There are 3 holes cut in the bottom of
the cabinet for venting.

Mr. Mogul, have you ever seen the "new, imporved" back I made for a Concert Grand? It really opens up the back, lets all the 44 tubes glow in all their radiant glory and it keeps the power transformers about 100 degrees cooler. I have one in cardboard for the Stereo Theater as well as for the Imperial. I made the one for the CG out of lauan, stained and shellacked, then with a good, heavy coat of semi-gloss polyurethane.

Magnavox thought to put holes in the bottom of the cabinet directly under the PT's in the amplifiers in the CG. The amount of heat that boils out of that cabinet with the CG in full song is astounding.

Those 4 threaded inserts above the amp were for the screw-on leg storage. When you unpacked the unit, just reach in the record compartment and get the legs.

I had a Zenith from 1956, that had those in the bottom of the cabinet, which did not have a back cover on the speaker side.

For heat problem areas I've used computer muffin fans, really effective in lowering temps and quiet enough not to hear them, and it will likely extend tube life.
