Curbside Philco stereo

Post: # 7673Post William »

Thursday and Friday was Hart's clean up days. Not yard, but lets clean out the junk in the house and garage and put it by the curb for a Saturday pickup day. I don't live in the City of Hart, but in a small subdivision right behind Hart's school system. It really should have been in the City. Because I'm not in the City I was not made aware of the cleaning days until I traveled into the City on Friday and found yard after yard filled with cool stuff. As I rounded the corner heading to where I was going I spotted a piece furniture. Was it a cedar chest, buffet or, console stereo? I pulled up, jumped out of my little Ford Ranger and took a look. It indeed was a console stereo. I lifted the lid and found the name Philco on the tuner. It is a SS model, VM changer, and six speakers. I loaded it up, drove to my house, plugged it in, turned it on, and it played. All controls are dirty, and the platter does not turn but I get a loud noise when I scratch my finger over the needle. For now, it's in my pole barn along with a few others waiting restoration. Here's a photo:

Philco FORD got alot out of transistors when they went SS then out of the console business not long after.

I have not found a TOTL SS Philco to date but the one you have likely has the same tuner as one I had recently.

If yours has tone/function pushbuttons, that means it is the more powerful version. The one I had was all knobs.

I wish, but it's all knobs. It does sound pretty good though.

Next time I go to the barn I'll raise the hood and take a photo. It will be a few days, I just had knee surgery today and I'm elevating and icing for a few days. Stay tuned!
