Fresh Mixmaster squeezed orange juice

A man I work with has a miniature juice orange tree in his backyard. Neither he nor his wife care for orange juice. The tree had so many oranges on it, he had to prop it up to keep it from breaking. He was going to toss all the oranges. He brings them to me instead. The wife ate juice oranges until her eyeballs were turning orange. He brought another big box or oranges to work for me, so it was then my job to squeeze them. The juice is really sweet this year. Pictures of the process, which beats shoveling snow.......

We're in FL on Tierra Verde Key at the wife's sister's house right now, orange trees right next door,
palms all around, 83 degrees, swims in the heated pool today and 5 o' clock started at 4...life is good!
For a lifetime boater it's a year round paradise, every time we visit here I swear we aren't leaving, one
of these times that just might happen.

The guy is from Wisconsin. I accused him of suffering from frostbite to the noggin. This may be the best orange juice I ever drank. The pulp was so fine, it get thru the shaky screen on the Mixmaster attachment into the juice. That makes it thicker than usual. It is simply Magnificent.....

The wife and I were talking about that the other day. We got the chrome Mixmaster, three sets of mixing bowls, stainless, white glass and clear glass, the juicing attachement, the bread hook. I can't remember what it cost, but it was less than $75 in 1966. This one is a model MMB. The attachments will fit older and newer Mixmasters, as I understand it. I don't know how much power it has, but I can't squeeze hard enough to slow it down. We broke the original black turntable a number of years ago and replaced it with a brown one. I understand they now repop the correct black turntable for it.

My Mom had the juicer attachment as shown for her 1940s Mixmaster. Once in a blue moon she'd have a surplus of oranges and we kids would come down in the a.m.for breakfast to fresh-squeezed orange juice, one of life's most exquisite taste treats. Fresh OJ is still my idea of being in heaven. Seems to me that she ended up with her mother's Mixmaster of similar vintage and both of them ended up with governor/speed regulator issues. They're both at the house and will be in the estate sale unless a devoted collector speaks up.

It's a good thing for my space issue I'm not closer, Chris. I admire Mixmasters, how they work, how they are built. Quiet, tough and dependable. I have bent several sets of beaters feeding spoons thru them. Never hurt the Mixmaster any. That thing will eat a rubber spatula and never slow down. I sold the stainless steel one at the sale. I kept the yellow one and the green one. I sold a set of white bowls with the stainless one and got $240 for it.

Some of the folks on the vintage appliance site are real Mixmaster experts. The consensus is that the best ones were made up to about the '70s. They pop up on local CL here fairly often, typically for $50 or less. I may pick one up for camp if I can find one in an interesting color, my wife really likes to bake.

When I was growing up, my grandmother was a killer diller wheeler dealer and she would work up deals on various foods that she would divine that they had too much of and wanted to get rid of. Near our house in Michigan there was a fellow who raised popcorn, who also wanted to own a Siamese cat. My grandma traded a purebred kitten for what must've been 200 lbs. of packaged popcorn. She got it in 1962, and she still hadn't used it all by the time she passed in 1974. Again in Michigan she did a bit of trading with a gent who raised turnips. She had a 1950 4 dr. Buick and I remember she and I and my sister and my cousin pulling turnips as the first snow fell that year, 1964. she crammed the trunk full with burlap bags of them and piled them up in the back seats. My cousin and I rode the 160 mile trip on top of the bags of them. We had turnips at least noon and night. My mother canned and froze sliced turnips, the last cans were still there when she moved back to Michigan in 1980. About 1965, she came across another farmer who for some reason had a surefit of green beans. We filled burlap bags and my grandma made her '59 Olds 88 play the pickup truck for several trips. My mother froze them in bags, canned them in mason jars and we went on a green bean binge that summer trying not to waste any. My sister achieves the color of a green bean when they are mentioned. We left numerous jars of those too when she moved back to Michigan. My grandmother went through the same deals with both bread and milk. You'd be surprised how many years frozen bread can last.

All I can say is WOW, that is a lot of freezing and canning. My Mom and both Grandmothers canned a lot of stuff. We didn't get a freezer until 1963 and that was mostly used to freeze meat and a few other things. Personally I do not have good luck freezing bread. It's freezer shelf life is short without getting funny.

I like Dave's Killer Bread and like to get the buns as well. I'll get some, and put it in the refrigerator. It keeps well. I have a pack of buns I'm now using from, whose sell by date is mid-November.

I like Dave's Killer bread too. They do not sell it in my little town so I get it when I go to Sam's or Costco. Buns, I have never seen buns? When I get to the city I usually buy two of the double packs that Costco sells. Dave's does freeze better than most breads, maybe because it a heavy bread?
