What was I thinking?

Post: # 5455Post hermitcrab »

I have been in the middle of a kitchen remodel and update for the last month.... yesterday the granite counter tops were installed and it is just beautiful .... they even installed the undermount sink my wife picked out... hurrah.... last and final job ... hook up the drain to the sink...My wife ordered a fancy one with the cutting boards and colanders and strainers... then murphy's law strikes ...the sink she ordered and installed is 11 in deep.... standard sinks are 9.... my drain from the sink sits 2 inches lower than the p-trap coming out of the wall and since we also installed a garbage disposal ... it lowered the drain even more ....since I cannot access the pipe in the wall ... now I have to install a new drain pipe under the sink down though the new cabinet though the floor and into the basement so I can intersect the existing vent drain just to lower the p-trap enough to even just hook up the drain and stay in code.... never thought about the depth of the sink not being standard .... the fun never ends ...

You are fortunate that you have a basement to give you room to maneuver. Out here, houses are built on a concrete slab on the ground. Getting into situations like that are part of home remodeling. I've never seen it to fail. At least you are on the good husband list. That seldom happens with me. ;) ;) :!:
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison

A good dry basement is a wonderful thing, no doubt. We couldn't live in this little 900 sq ft rancher without a decent sized basement that has 8+ ft headroom, is bone-dry (at least for the last 16 yrs we've owned it, knock on wood), has tons of shelving, and even an 8 x 10 bomb shelter built in 1961 that's not only dry but fire-proof! The other thing that makes this place tenable is a 3 car garage (2 car + a 3rd car stall that I put on the back for the wife's Mustang in winter), and a 10 x 16 shed that used to house the previous owner's Model A! The attic here is inaccessible and useless, so a good basement and outside storage is essential.

I'm jealous. My small 1908 house has a "Michigan basement," mostly crawl space with a central low-ceilinged concrete pit for the boiler and water heater. I do keep electronic parts & supplies down there at the top of the concrete walls, where they end at crawlspace level. The reason the ceiling is low (or floor high) is that if they had dug another foot down they'd be at water table. I do have a good 2-car garage out on the alley. It was built deep enough that I have a heated shop across the back of the two stalls. The garage holds one Mustang, a sea kayak, a rowing shell, an iceboat, three phono consoles, 6 bicycles, shelves of old radios and electronics, shelves of 8 mm movie cameras, boxes of hardware, boxes of books and all the associated debris that comes with owning boats & cars houses. It's full. Now with my Mom's death I'm getting my share of the cool stuff that won't be sold off or given away. Where to put it? There's that "declutter" lady who says to pitch whatever doesn't bring you joy. Well, "deleted", this stuff brings me joy or supports my things that bring me joy.
