paint on a console

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get paint drips off a console? I tried a couple of things but they did not work.

How big are they? Tiny ones can often be removed by careful scraping with a sharp knife blade.

They are tiny drips. I tried scrapping but was scratching the wood. I need a finer and sharper blade I guess. Thanks, Chris.

If there is dirt on the cabinet, under the paint, you might try Go-Jo hand soap, the kind without pumice, and 0000 steel wool. Go-Jo won't cut latex paint, but it will remove the dirt under it and float off the paint. Go easy with Go-Jo. It can take off lacquer if the lacquer is not in good shape. You might also try the tip of an Exacto knife if you have one. Or the edge/tip of a single edge razor blade. Good luck.

Instead of using a sharp metal blade, what about trying a plastic putty knife or something similar. Hopefully it wouldn't be so hard that it will scratch the finish (as much). All of the problems I've had with the finishes in my consoles were beyond the finish and stains into the wood.

Or try a new backed-spine razor blade in a holder at a very very shallow angle, this has worked for me on a number of occasions. If it's shallow enough and done with slow even pressure it may not make any marks.

If the paint is latex, it will come off with softening
with water.

I have used a damp sponge left on wood for
5 minutes at a time.

Test with a plastic edged utensil of whatever
kind to gently coax off the paint.

It may take 3-4 apps of the sponge, but I've
had success with this and no damage.

I never use metal utensils for this.

Bill, I have used GOO-gone with pretty good results... or toothpaste ... some use lacquer thinner but if you are trying to save the finish that is out of the question... I tried lacquer thinner on a corner of the magnavox where the finish was wrinkling up ... it took it all off...

Bill, have you made any progress on getting the paint off the cabinet?

Nope, not yet. I have been working on some other projects trying to get caught up before I start a new one.
