1947 model

Post: # 3178Post TC Chris »

I found an old link to a ham radio guy' site. He also like a variety of old audio electronics, test instruments, etc. He was captured by this 1947 Magnavox. Read about it here:

Here's his index:

Those unit's recievers when properly restored and aligned are quite good for both SW and AM DX'ing. My unit is a bit older, with the radio and amp/speaker power supply all on the same chassis, with FM as an add-on feature. They are a good performer with a nice long wire antenna.

The alacarte FM tuner in my Berkeley was an option, with a delete plate on non-FM equipped models. Mine is not performing so well, even after recap and alignment it is not all there plus it drifts as it warms up.

The 48 Windsor has a tuner and amp more like this one in Chris's link, with FM included. I agree this style of Mag tuners are very adaptable to reception issues, with that sharp-tuned bandpass filter.

This was a nice restoration thread and treats that Magnavox like a fine automobile. The Chippendale cabinet looks like a fairly rare Philco 41-611 I have.

I did a recap on all electrolytic and micamold (paper) capacitors. There were plenty of resistors that lived up to Magnavox's short lives. I found a copy of Magnavox's service notes on FM tuner alignment and that helped me get it on track.
