Audio Input Wiring ? 1954 Sears 4048 Radio Phono

Post: # 30787Post Hi-Fi-Mogul »

The separate power supply is re-capped and functional.

Dave1138 did me a favor and checked the radio/phono
chassis, and said it has a good chance to work with a
re-cap. So, I'll do that later this month.

What I want to do is wire an RCA jack to the phono
input plug, so I can plug in a record changer, CD, et cetera.

I have the original 3 prong male phono plug, but the V-M
changer is missing.

Looking at the phono input diagram, I think one connection
probably went to the changer tonearm or base.

Would someone post their diagram of how to do the new wiring ?

Thanks !

RCA jack ground goes to bottom and right pins on the diagram. Signal (RCA plug center pin)goes to left pin.

Yes, I understand the diagram.

It looks like I will have to figure out how to
connect 2 pieces of shielded wire into the
holes of those 2 pins, once cleared of solder.

Many times you can peel a length of the shield away from the cable, a half-inch or so. Then twist it into a shape that you can solder to ground. I wouldn't be so concerned about putting it back like it was as long as it is grounded to the same spot. The schematic shows that shield grounded to chassis. That should make it easier.

OK.

Would my guess be correct that one of those 2 ground connected
pins had the shield side also wired to the record changer base ?

(changer is gone, so I can't confirm)

Thanks

Typically, yes. There is usually some method of grounding the changer base to the chassis, particularly when a transformer power supply is used. When hot chassis construction is found, different methods of grounding the cartridge, then floating the changer base is used. You don't want the changer base connected directly to one side of the line.
