H H Scott Carlyle console

This console is available in a somewhat nearby antique store, he's asking $400 which is too much for an unrestored example, but I plan to negotiate and maybe trade. Haven't been to see it yet, but was interested in what you guys think. Google says that's an HH Scott Stereomaster 342 receiver, not sure if it's hybrid or all SS. Garard changer, and probably sealed speaker enclosures? I'm looking for a console to restore for my daughter and son in law as a housewarming present, and they liked this one, and actually have a space for it! I don't see anything that says "solid state". The tuning meter appears to be a tube, so I'd guess it was at least a hybrid chassis. It has a pretty cabinet, so if your kids like it, I'd say go for it. It's good that younger people want a console stereo. Good luck with it! Be sure to share the restoration with us!

The changer appears to be a Garrard 2025TC.

They are nice ones with a smooth tonearm set down
on the record.

They are not difficult to service, cycling design a bit similar to
the ubiquitous BSRs.

Thanks, Ken! Knowing the model number of the receiver has enabled me to find some information on the web. If I decide to tackle this restoration, I'll post the project in the Other Consoles section.

So, got some more pix from the seller (the top view photo in my original post is not of this specific unit). It's SS, and schematics that I have found for the similar (but not identical) Scott stand-alone receiver, the 342, show that it uses several analog ICs, so I am wondering if that would be a major problem if one of them is bad: no idea if they are standard ICs, but I suspect not. So that could be a problem. The manuals/parts lists seem to be oriented towards module replacement, instead of component-level repairs. Good news, however, is that somewhere I read that its transistors are silicon, not germanium, so easier to find replacements if that is true. Notice this has front-panel phono plug inputs for a guitar and a mic (for sing-alongs?), and that the electronics are mounted in a specialized chassis, specifically for use in the console.

That looks like a nice Garrard changer, but the seller has the wrong 45 adapter inside.

Anybody have experience with these HH Scott receivers? I haven't yet decided to take the plunge. I'm also going to post this on ARF.

Thanks for all the inputs! I ended up buying a Zenith X940 console instead. He had several consoles, my daughter liked the Zenith styling better. This is what that model looks like, mine is a little darker, in walnut. It's still in the back of my VW Golf, in the garage! BTW, I traded my Magnavox portable (https://www.classichificare.com/viewtopic.php?t=3692) plus $100 for the console. The finish is in great shape, but the control panel has some issues with peeled-off foil. I'll be writing up my restoration later, in the Zenith section.

I had one similar, then sold it to a customer. Mine was solid state with a 2-gram tone arm. I think it had some version of a VM changer. It had a solid state chassis with shutters that closed over the speaker enclosures. Mine was a 1968 model, just about the time that Zenith and RCA started kicking Magnavox's butt, both in styling and in performance. The only thing I disliked about the one I had was the infernal combination volume/balance control. I'm not smart enough to figure out how to use one of those controls. I love those cabinets....
