Linda Ronstadt did a good duet with Johnny. Better than the nasally June Carter. I have this song by Hank Snow and Anita Carter. I wasn't aware that anyone else had recorded it. Dennis, if you like country, you should come up here some Saturday and we'll jam......

My "Country" stuff ends about 1955, with a lot of pre-war 78's. I don't remember if I posted a foto of my audition system for them.

Starts out with a modern QRK multi-speed TT with a vintage GE VRII mono cart & 3 mil diamond.

Then into a vintage Presto amp, University crossover, and on to an Altec 515 LF and 806 HF on a Stephens horn.

More or less all rack mounted, and a vintage WECo VU meter panel.

Love the vintage rig! It probably gives the same satisfying sound that the record-preview system at Lucky's Record Shop gave in the early '60s. Just a big sound, starting with a happy thump when the stylus hit the lead-in groove. I think theirs used a VR II also.

One thing virtually unknown about 78s from the late 30's on was there were two types produced for virtually every hit tune: Direct to disc for broadcast distribution, and consumer records done with audio compression mainly to prevent groove jumping on loud passages.

Radio stations got those discs, as they had an audio compressor in the chain just before the transmitter input. Turns out one audio compressor following another sounds horrible.

I have several disc titles in both types, and one can really hear the difference.

That is impressive, would love to hear it. Doesn't that big woofer interfere with the turntable causing the tone arm to skip?

It hasn't happened yet...

There is no mechanical connection between the rack and the turntable support.

Dennis, your photo posted sideways probably due to the fact that it was taller than the system is set to accept. Clicking on it will allow it to be viewed like you want it. Pixels and bits and nonsense like that.....

I have a Les Paul and Mary Ford 78, on RCA, that is as clear as recordings of much later vintage. I also have a good Russ Morgan record, on Mercury. The lady I got this set of records from had a Miracord turntable with a GE VRII cartridge that used a diamond needle and fairly light tone arm weight. She kept the records clean, kept the needle in good condition and didn't let her kids and grandkids mess with them. She had a big Bogen amp and a couple of big speakers. I didn't buy the equipment at the auction, just the records. I wish I had bought the entire setup.
