Bobby Darren "Who Left The Door To Heaven Open"

Post: # 30020Post electra225 »

Yessir, Bobby Darren singing country music, doing a spoof of an old Hank Thompson hit. I put a lot of quarters in the jukebox for the Thompson version. I had never heard of this guy before. I found him doing a search of who wrote this song. The guy has a pretty good band. He plays the guitar left-handed and upside down, kinda unusual, but he does a nice job. I thought maybe this one would be a new one that Danny hadn't heard of.

The Hank Thompson version, recorded in 1974. Written by Betty Duke. The Brazos Valley Boys doing backup with Larry Butler on steel. Just a dandy belly-rubber about as hard-core Hank Thompson as you can get.

I've heard of Bobby Darin but never Bobby Darren. He's a guy that I wouldn't mind seeing live because he sings real country music. He did a great job on that song but so did Hank Thompson. I'd bet there was a guitar in his household when he was very young, and he learned to play it like that. I've saw lefties play right hand guitars, but they reverse the strings and put the lower tone strings on top.

Here is the Richard Powell version of this song. Who, you ask, is Richard Powell?
