Suzy Bogguss

Post: # 29659Post electra225 »

I was introduced to Suzy Bogguss on the old Statler Brothers TV show from the 1980's. She and Ronna Reeves were the resident girl singers on the show. Arguably one of the better country variety shows of that time. The Statler Bros. started out as the Tennessee Two, backup singers for Johnny Cash. Then they went to the Tennessee Three, and finally changed their name to the Statler Bros., after a brand of toilet tissue of the time. Another feature of the Statler Bros. show was that Bill Walker was the musical director for the show. Mr. Walker was also Eddy Arnold's muscial director and was the main force behind his transformation from the Tennessee Plowboy to the replacement for Jim Reeves following his untimely death in 1964. Eddy Arnold always appeared in tux and tails when he performed on TV. Suzy Bogguss is a younger version of Emmy Lou Harris, kind of a combination of bluegrass, country, contemporary. Her style was reiniscent of Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, but smoother and more refined. The selection I linked, "When My Sweet Love Ain't Around" is one of her hits I particularly enjoyed.

Suzy is still very much with us and is still active. She will be 70 years old in December next....

In the event you have not done any serious toe-tapping today, allow me to offer this remedy. "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart" is an old Patsy Montana song, modernized here in stereo by Suzy Bogguss. Not much on yodeling typically, Suzy does it here without going nasally or falsetto so it is quite pleasant.

I have a CD with that song on it and it's probably Patsy Montana singing but I haven't listened to it for a long time. I think Suzy does a much better job singing it than Patsy did.
