Japanese Volt ohm meter

Post: # 888Post Hydrolastic »

Hello, picked up an item on eBay that i really liked and thought i would use it for testing speakers. Or anything else i can learn on. I liked it because of the meter orientation. But also very simple functions. When i got it i removed the back and the battery had exploded. Now i have to repair it. First cause now i have a little dough into it (very little). But also because i still like it. I am thinking a couple of things here, one is to put a micro plug in and rig an external battery. The other is to go get a couple of battery powered things from goodwill and try and rig up some new ends for the wires that was all that was left on the battery. Any suggestions ? Hydro

That is a cool looking unit, it's too bad it had Duracell batteries in it. I have never had a Duracell that did not leak and I refuse to buy them anymore. You might be able to do a good cleaning on the battery terminals and it will work? It's hard to tell from the photo just how bad it is.

I believe, like Bill said, I'd try a good cleaning first. If you get it good and clean, then find some of the terminals eaten away, you might be able to fix it with some solder applied to the corroded areas. I've done that before with good results. It depends on how much damage there is.

Hello, The metal spring loaded plates have dissolved in the ends of the battery leaving only the bare ends of the wires. I will try and figure out a way to get another non duracell battery in there. It may be a while I have a ton of projects going. Hydro

Vinegar on a Q-tip is great for cleaning up the battery waste. I'm embarrassed by how often I have to use that technique.

You can also solder the wires directly to the battery for a temporary fix, until you get parts to fix it permanently. I have a VTVM my stepdad did that to over 40 years ago. I just never got around to finding "the fix".

For something as nice as that meter, maybe a lithium battery might do well in it.

Another fix might involve scavenging spring terminals from another device, like an inexpensive battery box, and soldering them to what remains of the old terminals.

I once owned one of those Monarch meters. It was my first piece of test gear.
Baking soda mixed as a paste with a bit of water will dissolve that battery crud.

Well, another one of these popped up on the 'Bay so I made an offer and it was accepted. It's on the way.
This one looks filthy but includes the original box and instruction sheet.
Fingers crossed...

I've got one of those meters, but I don't remember the name. I like it for resistance measurements. Pretty good little meter.
