Guy Lombardo was also a hydroplane boat racer. He had boats built in Bay City, MI by Les Staudacher, a guy who ran a church-furniture company but had a side gig building hydroplanes. Guy and Les had a project to set a marine speed record with a jet-engined boat. You can read about it here:

The engine still lies somewhere on the bottom of Saginaw Bay, on the shore of which I m sitting right now. I may have sailed over it on my boat....

Thanks, Walter, I can remember when watching Guy at the Waldorf and the ball drop was a highlight to New Years Eve.
