Magnavox TV

This little "so ugly it's cute" TV set caught my eye. You don't see many Magnavox TV sets for sale, and even less 9" ones. The ad states it's made in Japan. I wonder what company actually built it? The ad also says it is a 1968, but it looks to me to be older than that, maybe the early 1960's? Magnavox started using Japanese-built output tubes in 1961, so it might even be as old as that. I don't see a UHF tuner. It has no high voltage, so that might be something simple or something tragic. Turning it on didn't help any.....

Ugly? No way.... That's good design, to my eye. But we all have different tastes. I just like the rectilinear, sharp-edged designs. And I agree with the stated 1968 date. That looks about right, and it's probably taken from a sticker on the TV like the one on the '77 Zenith Chromacolor I've been trying to give away. My Dad bought my grandmother a little Zenith of about the same vintage and it sat in her kitchen until we sold the house and Dad brought the Zenith home. It's tucked away on the cottage attic; maybe I'll look for a date at Thanksgiving.

Where is the UHF tuner? A 1968 model TV would have that....

Isn't UHF behind that little window on the channel selector knob? Roll that one into position, the use the outside knob for selecting the UHF channel. It's an old feature--my Dad's table-model 1955 (?) Sears TV has it.

What happened to the fine tuning control with that setup? How did they drive two tuners with one shaft? I assume the VHF tuner was on the inner shaft, the UHF on the outer? All that fancy engineering for a cheap little Japanese-built TV? Wow....

My assumption is that the little window is lighted and indicates the channel the tuner is on. Then the larger outside know was fine tuning. I have been wrong before....

It has VHF and UHF antenna connections.

I found another photo that indicates the UHF range is
in the selector window.
