I am disappointed in Mouser Electronics

Post: # 17088Post electra225 »

They probably have anything you could want. If you can find it. What a miserable website. I have to buy 600 .1uf@1000 volt caps to get one. I never did find a 9.1 Megohm resistor. They call them strange names. All I wanted was a 1-watt regular old carbon composition resistor. I got some of my stuff, but not what I need to move on. What a miserable outfit......

Senior moment question. To make a .1uf@1000 volt coupling cap, I can connect two .1uf@630 volt caps in series, can I not? I'm not going to buy 600 of anything... ;) Connected in series, I double voltage. Connected in parallel I would double capacity with the same voltage, right? And don't I remember seeing some TV repair videos where the factory paralleled resistors of different values to make one of a certain value? I need to fabricate a 9.1 megohm resistor out of more commonly available resistors. Maybe something AES would have. Their resistor stock only goes to 8.2 megohm. They are high, but they are local and I can save shipping. That will give me a good excuse to eat at Ted's Hotdogs. They are semi-on-the-way. ;) ;)

In fairness, Mouser has millions of items. In even more fairness, giving the benefit of the doubt, I don't know how one would organize such a large inventory and make it searchable. But neither does Mouser, apparently. Why can't you just search for what you want instead of all that brand/envelope/temp nonsense that I have no idea what they want for information. Surely there is a better way....

2 Identical caps in series results in half the capacitance. Some circuits require a high-value resistor across each to make sure the Voltage is distributed evenly.

Don't forget Tri-Tek in Mesa, just East of Country Club on Baseline. Lots of electronic parts in stock.

Thanks, Dennis. I never heard of Tri-Tek. I will definitely look them up. :D :D

There's also the question of whether we really need 64 different choices of toothpaste at the grocery store. Consumerism run wild.... But Mouser really does need to offer all the options because they are a wholesale supplier, and some manufacturer may really need radial leads, 105 degree C, etc. I used to get all frustrated climbing the learning curve every time I went to their site, but now I try to be grateful that they'll sell in small lots to us amateurs at all.

Requiring one to buy 600 caps of one value is not a small customer order. I reckon I should have tried calling them on the telephone. Selling parts to hobbyists may not be their forte, but making it difficult is not part of the fun. They should do better. Nobody is holding a gun to their heads to sell to amateurs. If they are going to do it for fun and profit, they should give it their best effort.

I agree with your statement about consumerism. I remember when there was one flavor of yogurt. You got it in a waxed cardboard container like cottage cheese came in. The only people who ate yogurt were those with stomach trouble. Now yogurt takes up one whole wall in the Dairy department. Diet yogurt, goat milk yogurt, fake milk yogurt, every flavor you can imagine.

AES may be expensive and may not have everything you need, but their website is easily maneuvered and understandable.

That may be a computer error. I've been able to make small buys from them.

I went ahead and tried to order the small amount of that cap I needed. It wouldn't let me to it at Checkout, so it was not a typo.

I see this resistor for 27¢ but the cheapest shipping is $7.99. Seems to me they used to offer cheaper shipping for small items.

Yeah, Ken, for what small amount of what I needed they actually would send me, shipping was $7.99. AES didn't have the values I needed or I'd just have paid their price and saved the shipping. AES needs to either fish or cut bait. I realize they cater to the guitar amp crowd now, but why not expand your customer base and offer a full line of components, not just the values found in guitar amps?

AES used to be just that, with heavy emphasis on collectable or reclaimed parts & tubes. Full counter service, too.

They stated it was too expensive an overhead when George Fathauer quit and went to being a guitar amp house.

Here's an idea...

Buy the 600 minimum of the most popular caps and resistors, make a website and sell them to restorers like us!

Sure if it were profitable, someone else would be doing it already....

And, yep, their website is a nightmare. Alice and Dorothy had less trouble getting home.

I remember remember when George would walk you through a repair right at the counter. If he didn't have something you didn't need it....... ;)

Here is just about all one will need for the average radio/Hi-Fi repairs:

http://www.tuberadios.com/capacitors/

I have used these guys for years, and the quality is just fine. Prices are great. Shipping is fast & cheap.

Mouser and DIgi-Key are just too hard to navigate, period.

Sal {[Brindisi?] did that,of course, and somebody took over his online business when he had health problems. I haven't ordered recently but that's probably still an option.

Sal, and my local guy Mike, is where I go for my supplies and now with Tony taking over for Sal, I will continue to use that company along with Mike of course.

Between Allied, AES and Justradios.com there is not much trouble ordering. Being in the Northeast, shipping from Canada is very reasonable, so I use the easy Excel Spreadsheet at Justradios.

I agree, Mouser site is frustrating. Newark and Digi-key only slightly less so.
