"Going Going Gone"

Post: # 16791Post tasar »

Rather special day for us radio types.
Cleveland's Estes Auction produced and sold two very RARE Scott sets.
The first photoed is an Allwave 27 (one of roughly 12 !!) in the Warwick Grande cabinet ( one of 3 known!!)... an unreal combo well beyond the aura of the Zenith Stratosphere !
The second is the Special Communications Receiver once owned by EH Scott, company founder.
Both mentioned to be in the same collector hands some 50 years !
I'll let the pictures do the talking !!

i have to say that I prefer a naked Scott chassis in all its chrome glory to that rather overwrought case. But rarity does command a price.

All I can say is WOW, and I'm glad I'm not on the delivery team to move that monster.

Someone mention Chrome ? I know of no audio/radio piece like the Scott Philharmonic BOL (beam of light)... it will make any McIntosh, Blush !
As rare as anything in yesterdays auction is having one of the 1st ever electronic remote controls seen here on my Philly ... I located after some 40 years of search !!

Do I read that dial right as showing reception up to 60 mHz?

Scotts always command a high price. I've not seen anyone complain that they were overpriced either. Beautiful sets. My paternal grandfather owned one. He drove an Auburn as well.

My Dad always talked about the Scott Allwave, the premium brand of the time. But the family radio was a 1935 Mont. Ward Airline console. I've got it. It ought to move up in the rehab queue.

Those are beautiful radios, Dave! I like the chrome chassis like everybody else. I also like the wood in the cabinets. The closest I'll ever get to owning a Scott is Grunow 1191 I have. The dial is much like the Scott dial you posted. Thanks for sharing the photos!..... :D :D

The APEX radio project.

Not to hijack this thread, rather add an unknown to many why that Scott worked all the way up to 70 MHz.

The better console radios of old were able to participate in the "APEX" High Frequency Hi-Fi project in the mid-1930's.

The article about my rare RCA 100F APEX transmitter: http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=32495.0

Wikipedia about the FCC allocation and station list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apex_(radio_band)

My transmitter was in LA when I discovered it, and was probably either used at W6XDA or W6XRE.

Great info Conelrad, thanks for sharing. I should illuminate a bit on the rare Scott Remote. It was a series of 24v wire feeds for broadcast, phono/radio switching. Looks like a canvas Boy Scout or troop belt, easy to conceal below a rug or baseboard up to 25' !

As for audio, the Subject's (where did that go) rare Allwave 27 and it's far More Common little sister the AW23, use a quad of the coveted 2A3 triode outputs. As opposed to the rather pedestrian 6L6 in the Philharmonic and others, it has, to my ears, the finest musicality.... not too flat, not too strident.... just pleasing even harmonics. No wonder it is the tube of choice, along with the earlier 45 triode, for SET amplifier builders !

Greg I have something to followup on your Grunow but will do so under "Radios and Tuners", we're getting Long on the tooth here and perhaps you'll decide to move the thread lock stock and barrel down to the aforementioned category.
