This rig has a metal cone picture tube. These are commonly found bad. I wouldn't ask this question anywhere else, but I will here. Why could not an enterprising individual use a 19" color tube out of a late plastic cabinet set and use it in this TV set in order to save it? Since I know little about this, it seems to my novice brain that one could connect the color tube so it would show black and white. I know a later tube would be rectangular and that some modification to the mask would be necessary. It seems a shame that such a nice instrument would be only good for parts. It seems that adapting later color tubes that are in essentially worthless sets would be something that could be developed.

That's a beautiful cabinet. You'd never know there was a TV in it...
Wasn't Jackie Gleason associated with Dumont? I know The Honeymooners was filmed with the Dumont system, whatever that was...

I posted this one awhile back:
https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/atq/ ... 19677.html
They look the same, but located in two different places here in Michigan and mine is less expensive. Interesting that two Dumont's would show up at the same time. I hope someone gets them and they do not end up in the dump. Now this RCA has popped up:

Re: Dumont 3-way console
is it even possible to convert a 3 gun color tube to strictly B&W only? interesting to think about... seems you would need to run all three guns to produce B&W...

Re: Dumont 3-way console
What got me to thinking about using a color tube for black and white is this. When the TV gurus troubleshoot an old color TV, the first thing they try to do is to get a stable black and white picture. Then they mess with the color. How do they get a black and white picture? Why couldn't that method be used to get a black and white picture on a color tube installed into an old Black and White TV chassis? They use little 5" or 8" test picture tubes when they work on these old sets, so why couldn't a bigger tube be used? How do color TV sets receive and re- produce a black and white program? I know color picture tubes run at higher voltages and that there are lots more pins on a color picture tube. There are still a good supply of unwanted color TV's around. It seems to me like some enterprising TV guy would find a way to use those picture tubes in interesting old TV's like those Dumonts.
