It rained....

Post: # 16645Post electra225 »

It rained here about an hour ago. We probably got a little over a quarter inch, but it came from the east, driven by a "microburst" which is wind ahead of a dust/thunderstorm. There is water everywhere. There is a hurricane in the Baja region, and we are supposed to get heavy rain this weekend. The TV stations have reporters stationed at all the water puddles, watching cars splash in the water. It was 134 days since we had rain, so it's a big deal here. At least I won't have to water the cactus anymore.

I was working in the shop and heard something hitting the window glass. Huge rain drops, looked like each drop held a gallon of water. The wind was driving the water and it came in around the glass on my French doors in the shop. So, this morning, I'll go out and see what is going on there. Did you guys get any dust? We may have gotten some, but nothing horrendous. I had just washed the windows on the house, so now that's to do again.

We must have gotten a pretty good storm sometime in the night. There was a section in our community that sustained considerable wind damage to trees, etc. Lots of palo verde trees and limbs down. There were trees across one of the major roads this morning. Our flag was ripped to shreds, and the light on the flagpole was blown almost a block and a half south of the flagpole. I typically take the flag down and retract the pole if we know it is going to storm. The weather babe on the TV said the storms would be done by 11pm. She was wrong this time. We were lucky. There are people with lots more damage than we got.

I saw there was to be Hurricane activity out west with torrential rains. It's bad when an area isn't equipped to handle such water. There is always a silver lining here when it rains. Our county had the foresight to devote areas to have reservoirs for our water and recreation. The water is as soft as treated water and we use UV purification with it.

The water out here has a lot of minerals in it. It eats up plumbing fixtures and your water heater. We have a water softener with a filter that removes chlorine, along with a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink. This house is plumbed with PEX, which it won't get eaten up with hard water. The water out here is undrinkable out of the faucet with no treatment.

When I lived in Utah, If you left any tap water in a glass to dry, it would leave a crystalline residue.

It looks rainy here this evening. One of the local weatherguessers/weatherbabes says we might get from a quarter inch to a half inch of rain from this "weather event". We can use a shower, we don't need the wind and dust.
