I came across these photos in a link looking for something else, and
I thought this set of photos says tons of buyer beware notes.
1. The very cute Magnavox consolette has had a V-M changer installed,
that I'd bet is not original for a consolette.
2. "Burn Notice" : The owner did not check out anything about the
electronics dis-"service" that was done before power up.
3. Some folks don't give a yahoo "deleted" about how
they do repairs (or damage in this case).
I know newbies just don't have any knowledge about how
these gals function, but it's painful to see such
undeserved destruction of a decent hi-fi.

Re: What Can Happen When...
Lots of magic smoke released when that happened. I can somewhat understand todays "plug and play" folks not thinking twice about plugging it in and seeing if it works. I don't know if it's a testament to build quality or some like this just get tossed, but I'm surprised there aren't more examples of abused tube equipment.
I spent weeks researching my 1st tube unit(Fisher X-100-3 integrated) before having the courage to hook up a DBT to a variac for testing. One of the things I did prior was to swap a 7025 from one of the PI positions with the center single tone control 12AX7. Research showed it would be OK at the end of that string and not in one of the driver positions. That might also explain why it had a blown 2W slow-blow in place of the specified 1.5W slow-blow. The prior owner probably didn't do much research and his mom put it in a garage sale for me to find. My Pilot console had been powered up(for photos) by the seller who found it at LawnMart. I declined a demo when I picked it up. A vintage 5AR4 would have cost 2X what I paid for the console.
Here's one from another forum re a CL ad for a Scott console. "The H. H. Scott 340B tube stereo amplifier/tuner needs repair, and I'll sell separately for $400. This unit played music while testing, played on the right side only. After getting hot, the unit then shut down."

Wow. Is that red-plating or a solar flare ? Ouch.macgolf wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2023 7:49 pm Here's one from another forum re a CL ad for a Scott console. "The H. H.
