Click sound on left speaker Magnavox CG

Post: # 14690Post Hydrolastic »

Hello guys, I had a chance to turn on the CG with some volume (wife has to be out). When I have the console on, the left speaker will click. Its a click sound that is neither high or low its a mid tone. Pretty sure its not from the horn seems to be the woofer. It happens every 3 to 5 seconds and seems random doesn’t happen on bass notes or drum hits if that makes sense. Its not on the right speaker or the left extension speaker. I have 2 extension SO37 speakers. But I can isolate them with the speaker selector switch. When I turn on the extension speakers there is not a click so it seems to be the left speaker inside the console. This is the big Utah speaker as I saw it described once, its on the right side of this photo it weighs a ton. What could be causing this ? speaker coil issue or is this some kind of an audio input issue? can it be exercised out somehow ? play lots of bass for a while or does that hurt the speaker?

Is something loose? Maybe a mounting bolt? Or something in the cabinet vibrating? My CG doesn't put out enough bass at full volume to hurt a 4" radio speaker, let alone one of those big CG speakers. I must have the only dud CG every built. ;)

My Symphony had a strange noise one time that I traced to a speaker wire that had come in contact with a speaker basket. Magnavox had sloppy wiring, remember...... ;)

does it tick regularly or is it random ?...I had that issue with a small table radio that would just click randomly while talking or music, at first I thought it was interference from something else ... so for the heck of it I changed the speaker and it went away... the speaker I took out still worked so it went into another project ...my guess would be dust or dirt or something in the voice coil?

Hello, That's what the plan is... to swap out the speaker. Through no effort on my part I ended up with this extra speaker I hope it is a close match to the one in there. I have no idea of its condition either.

A match only matters if the click goes away with the replacement speaker. If it stays, then there's an electronic source. Don't toss the old speaker yet.

Hello Chris, In this case I am hoping its a match, its for the CG which is super nice condition and I want to keep it in as original condition as possible.
So I recently purchased a 584 037 speaker to match the one I already had and installed both of them in the SO-37 cabinets to make them essentially SO-47 speakers. They looked identical to the CG speaker but they measured 3.7 and 3.9 ohms each the CG speakers are 8 ohms I think that the Cg was designed to have 4 ohm external speakers because they now are the same volume as the one in the console. Another thing I thought was funny is that the speakers were from completely different sources but one is dated 039 and the other is 040. Thing is I think they can now be used for both the CG and the continental. One thing for sure when all four speakers kick in you know it!

My point was that if the problem turns out NOT to be in the speaker, you can put the old one back in. A temporary substitute might tell you whether it's a speaker problem or some other one. And the temp. need not be an exact match of you're only trying to decide if it's the speaker or not. But if you have a match, you're all set.

I had a guy in Missouri with a set of external speakers for my CG/Imperial in production. He was killed in an auto accident, and the plans for the project and the project itself disappeared. He was building cabinets out of solid cherry. I had the speakers and wiring all ready to go. They were like the CG cabinet, with a 15" a 12" and a horn in each cabinet. I will always wonder how those speakers would sound on one of the big Magnavox stereos.

Hello Guys, I put the 037 woofers in the external speakers and they are hooked up to the CG. I had it about 2/3 rds, no click listened for an hour while I was in the other room. I came in to turn it off and I could hear the click again... So when its warmed up or certain songs IDK which . it still has a click on the left side console speaker. I have the extra one with the correct part number. Will try and get it in there this week or the next.
