Kutztown PA - DVHRC Antique radio show

Post: # 14622Post Motorola minion »

The spring meet at the Delaware Valley Historic Radio Club draws all kinds of equipment and buyers together. There are several such club meetings 2 hours south of here in the Baltimore and Washing DC areas. Sure, this is only in my backyard, but I figured posting a picture of our motley crew and a typical club meet I attend spring and fall each year since 2010. I am on the far left, trying to hear a question from a customer about some Ham equipment I had.

In the foreground is a 1960 Motorola SK-32 3-channel beauty and 1959 Zenith SFD-something that is phono only and "Extended stereo" gimmick that I find quite intriguing. This Z did not work and was being picked up by an enthusiast who traveled from Jersey-Suburban NYC, like so many customers who pop in from a decent radius. I met 3 folks from GA and other regulars from TN, NC WV, V, NY DE OH and MD. Its like woodstock for radio-audio-ham nuts. The TV guys are rare, Im one of only 4 who regularly bring working sets, broadcast gear (channel 12 and 8) sending out old shows from DVD and VCR. My "covid" 59 Motorola 21" table model is shown for sale at $125 (it didnt sell) though I would have taken 85. Our biggest problem: too many little cars coming in, means customers wont buy big stuff. Unfortunately the photo below shows the donor line before the bonfire I always miss.

I've been there a couple times. I found an excellent Crown r2r that my friend bought and the seller didn't live far from his home.

When is or was the spring meet?

I remember meeting Mark oppat who rebuilds the Fisher volume pots. Great to see these guys in person and get to talk to them.

Here we are on the "sales floor" this is a twice-a-year tradition of exchanging projects and hopefully coming home with enough cash for at least one trip to the grocery and market. Only that '59 motorola TV is mine.

Here is what initially looks to be a sad scene, the cabinets of all kinds that will be part of a bonfire. The ash pit is dug and until it gets dark, there will be removing of hinges, decent wood panels, dial glass, emblems and removal of entire sub-assemblies like record changers and drawer hardware (I do this! :P ). The vast majority are Philco Radios that were improperly stored, then disposed or fully recycled out :D . This is a cleansing and solemn ceremony to honor the passing of these brave enduring soldiers from unviable projects in order to give life to other projects with just a simple need: the correct OEM part.

May 12-13 and September 15-16 https://dvhrc.com/

Some famous folks show up now and then. Ron Ramirez who wrote the Philco Book sold me two 1966-67 Sherwood receivers for $30 ;) . A former Magnavox TV dealer from TN, Julian Burke is also a regular. Many characters wander in from New England and Midwest, are unforgettable when a rented box truck has unlimited radio projects pouring out at prices from the 70s.I wouldn't mind meeting Mark Oppat :) , these events are regular enough to have such icons showing up.

Greg, that's a Zenith.

Dave, you are the one on the left with the cap and blue shirt?

Yes Bill, thats my Philco diamond service emblem shirt, sold by the club. I'm always on my feet straining to hear someone. Coveralls underscore the "country vibe" we maintain, think Junior Samples on HeeHaw selling cars. This is more exhausting than any weekend at camp up north.

That Motorola was just picked up (working as found and impressing everyone) by the second guy from the right, my best restoration customer who sniffs out bargains like a beagle and sells them for more than I ever could, only after I do the usual to the chassis/cabinets and he gets the players done at an expert dude in Frederick, Md. The Motorola SK32 was not for sale but got some intense interest just like the Motorola "twins" he also brought along, I had just restored. He managed to sell the Zenith (pre-arranged pick-up) and a very modest 1960 Magnavox phono console SC-something with glass slider lids and only three knobs on the front.

Here is my 2x a year chance to downsize and reconsider projects, since 2010. It took a few years to resist all the opportunities, coming home with cash and less stuff tahn you took. It's mostly fun to recognize the regulars if you be one. :geek:

Dave, I've got to go there with you sometime, been wanting to get to Kutztown since before I moved away from MD.
There used to be a really good Hamfest in Westminster and people were always talking bout Kutztown, one time around 1997 a guy showed up at the MD one with a PALLET of surplus ex-military 12a_7 tubes (we were near a lot of the surplus sales from military installations around DC) and IIRC they were asking around $3 a piece...I should have bought the whole thing!
