Re: Another trip back in time.
As you know, Bill, I have some Consumer Reports from around this time. It's amazing to read what they have to say about some of the things we hold dear on this forum......

Thanks for taking the time to post this interesting reading....

A fun catalog to view, Bill.
I need several hundred lifetimes to go through
all the World Radio History archives that would
be interesting to me.

I so enjoy looking back in time, the time when I was growing up, and see all the things that were available then and the prices they were. Oh, to have those same items priced that way today.

oh my, down the rabbit hole.... What a great collection of cool stuff! All those brands!! You could buy a JBL Paragon (and if you had kept it could sell it to the Japanese and retire on the proceeds) or a Thorens TD-124. I looked for all the stuff I have and remember the excitement of meeting budget and getting the best performance. What fun.

I have about 7 Allied catalogs between 1936 and '65, plus some Heathkit ones from that era, and a couple of those directories and HiFi Guides. Good for hours of remembering. I've had a lot of that stuff in the past, and never get tired of looking at them again.
I think the only ones tqahgt got away that I reeeaaly wish I still had is a Fairchild 248 preamp, 2 Fairchild 255A amps (EL34), and Altec 846a speakers (way too big for the wife!) and a Thorens 124 (early version). But honestly I doubt it really sounded any better than a current Scott EL-84 setup w/ modern small Klipsch spkrs.

Sherman Fairchild was born not far outside Binghamton our present home. He was truly a polymath and genius in the truest sense of the word. The scope of his brilliance was truly amazing: from aircraft to electronics, recording, transistor manufacturing, art. architecture... his townhouse in Manhattan is an icon. Google him, he's quite the guy that you've never heard of... go back in time and get to know him!
