Snow... again :-(
Snow... again :-(
Well the NorthEast is getting belted once again. This year we seem cursed, in that every time the snow melts and the yard is clear, within 24 hours we get more. No big ones, and sometimes none on the pavement, but... I'm SO ready for Spring! At least it isn't far off now - I keep telling myself. Every year we go to Fl and every year I ask myself why aren't we buying a refuge from winter here? Then I get home and forget all about it. C'mon Spring!

I feel your pain, Roger, we just got snow again too, but the sun is out today and that is always a good thing.

Re: Snow... again :-(
It's coming. My purple iris bloomed yesterday morning, just in time for the 28 degree temps this morning. It's windy, too so a bag would have knocked them over.

I agree. Spring is just around the corner. The citrus is blooming, the desert flowers are out. It was 81 here yesterday. In 30 days or so it will start getting warm....

Or insufferably hot? ... that's my problem with AZ, yes humidity's lower but highs of 100 to 110+ for 6 months is pretty insufferable, says my old car friend in Surprise, he says average highs are over 100+ from mid-May to October. So stay inside from heat or cold? not sure which is worse. He goes to Maine in the summer. Snow-birding... best of both worlds?

My dad would leave Indiana during the worst of snow season and rent in Florida. When it came time to make his move, he chose the more moderate (than Indiana) climate of Arkansas. Not crowded nor expensive. I visited him a few times when I was stationed at Ft Riley. It did look to be a good choice. I never saw it snow there.

We were snowbirds for several years. The trip got to be too much. I reckon I'm unusual. I don't mind the hot weather. If you stay hydrated and stay in the shade, you can get by pretty well. We don't have to shovel snow, we don't lose power, the water doesn't freeze, you don't need snow tires or checking the antifreeze in the car. You pick your poison, I reckon. What kind of car does your friend have, Roger?

Re: Snow... again :-(
Here in northern lower Michigan, usually a snow belt, we have dodged all the big dumps this winter. They've gone south or north. As a bicycle commuter, I can be grateful. Not so good for other outdoor winter activities. I get WoodenBoat magazine. The latest issue contained a report from a correspondent on Martha's Vineyard, MA: "In this zone, climate change has all but eliminated pond hockey, ice boating, and cross-country skiing, so we must find other enjoyable distractions to get through the winter." That meant working on boats.
My morning commute takes me past a big city park. When we finally started getting some cold weather, I'd pass the city crews laying out hoses for flooding an ice rink. Nice try, guys. As soon as they started to get some ice, we got a big thaw. My ice skates never got out of their box. The iceboat stayed in the garage. I have been out on the X-C skis once. Snowshoes, not at all. Bicycle, every day (almost).

He's a Mopar guy, been about a year since we talked, he has a '66 NY'er.
Working on boats is a great winter pursuit, like playing with electronics is. I used to get Wooden Boat back in the '80s and '90s when I had my wood Thompson and Chris Crafts. I learned how to steam bend wood from it. Wooden boat building is big in Maine and the NorthEast and Chesapeake Bay. My cousin lives near Brooklin, I used to dream of going to their boat building classes but have since aged out of that desire!
We've dodged most of the big storms also, but have gotten a lot of little ones, 2 more inches last night.
But 50 degrees predicted for Friday, so hope is on the way!

I definitely would not want to be in certain locations in California right now either.......

Re: Snow... again :-(
We in the upper midwest just sit back and grin. Here's an interesting piece on Duluth, once a rust-belt loser, now thriving as a refuge from climate change. It's right there at the west end of Lake Superior. I'm not surprised to read that it has been discovered; it is a cool place and I've been expecting coastal people to discover our region. We have no earthquakes or hurricanes and few tornadoes; we have water; conditions are mostly predictable Looking a housing prices, it has already happened in TC too. The only problem with being discovered by coastal refugees is that it badly skews housing prices. My town is a prime example. Houses formerly occupied by regular people are being bought up for $$$$$$$$$$ as second homes or short-term rentals.
