Traverse City, where I live, is home to a Coast Guard air station. They cover a large territory for search and rescue and such--the nearest one is Detroit. Here's a news story on a rescue from Mackinac Island, lying near the Straits of Mackinac between our upper and lower peninsulas. The weather was too bad for commercial air evacuation flights, but nothing stops the Coast Guard. Note that the roster included the rescue swimmer--the guy who jumps out of a nice safe warm helicopter into cold and stormy waters to save other people. These are remarkable people. Let's just say that your tax dollars are well spent on the Coast Guard's air station.

Re: Coast Guard air rescue
I'm not sure I would be brave enough to take that flight, but I'm ever so grateful there are people out there who do.
