Does that have a stereo amp? The seller suggests it does.

I'm hoping somebody can tell us about that. My guess is that it needs an external amp to be full stereo. It doesn't have the FM MPX position on the function switch, so I'm again guessing that it is pre-1959. I'm not up on the pre-1959 stuff like I should be.

This is an interesting find. It shows up in the 1957 catalog/brochure and is gone by 1959. It's called a Magnavox Super Magnasonic. It looks like there were three cabinet styles in 1957 ranging in price from $259.50-389.50. 20 watt amp, 15 and 12" woofers, 4 and 5" tweeters. It had glass tops and glass fronts, quite deluxe for something that was not over priced. There was no mention of stereo in the brochure, but non-amplified companion speakers were available. In 1958, it now has more cabinet styles to pick from and it now has a two channel amp with a stereo cartridge. The matching companion speakers has the same speaker arrangement as the main console. The 1958 brochure indicates the tuner was an option. I find it amazing how Magnavox came up with there models, and how they swapped components around to make up the different models, and then their price points. I guess it was early corporate America and the bean counters at work.

Many of them seemed to play the mix and match game in that unsettled period, Even component makers like H-K and Sherwood offered add-on amps and mpx to keep customers satisfied that their expensive mono rigs hadn't become obsolete. With consoles add-on outboard speakers were often seen. The Ethan Allen cabinet I have had 1 speaker with space for components, and a much larger satellite speaker, it was from 1959-60.
