Speaker reconing

Post: # 12113Post electra225 »

I'd like to give speaker reconing a try. I think I can do it. There are tons of places here locally that recone speakers. They only want to do the audiophile or guitar amp speakers, the ones they can charge the big money to do. They have no interest in the smaller speakers in radios or record players. The biggest issue to reconing is finding the parts. The only places I've found so far that offer speaker parts for small cones is off-shore. I'd like to deal with a company is the US of A. And I need a place that has a good supply of voice coils. Any ideas or suggestions.

Edit....places want between $56 and $85 dollars to recone an 8" paper cone speaker with a 1.5" or 2" voice coil. Plus shipping, since they are not local. So I'm going to have over $100 in a speaker for my record player, too much money. I'm way too cheap to do that. I need a pincushion frame speaker. I have plenty of round 8" speakers, but they won't let the speaker board go back into the cabinet. I found one used 8" on the bay, but I have a used one. I can get the parts on Amazon for about $25. Cone, voice coil and spider.
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison

When I discovered that I needed a new 5X7 for my VM not so portable model 557 I contacted Gary to see if he had a new one. Nope was his answer but he gave me the name and number of a guy that he recommended. I called the guy, he was kind of gruff sounding, but said if I had 50 bucks and paid shipping both ways, he would rebuild my speaker. I said thank you and moved on. I'm trying to remember where he lived, like maybe Montana or one of the Dekota's. I will look to see if I can find his info and post it here if I do.

If it was a guy in Utah, I had an absolute horrible experience with him....

Ironically, I did not send in a speaker to recone, I purchased a specialty speaker he reconed and listed it on eBay. He is a "speaker rebuilder" and an ebay seller.

There is a place around Lansdale, PA, I think. I needed a replacement oval for a Fisher WS-1 and, rather than recovering mine, he sold me a NOS Utah speaker for $20 that was an exact replacement so...

I follow Uncle Doug's YouTube channel. They guy is a guitar amp guy, but he gives a lot of good information for us lesser folks. Here is one on rehabbing a speaker without reconing. Since the cone in my wonky Magnavox speaker is in good shape, this might be worth a try.

I was amused today when ARF directed me to better info on my GE LC-628. The parts list shows the part no. and price for a speaker cone! Back in the day you could score one from GE for $1.90. I need one. Maybe I'll send 'em an order ad a check and see what they send back....
