General Electric "Porta-Fi" Console Stereo

Post: # 11486Post electra225 »

I worked for a man who had one of these in his office. Fantastic sound, when it worked. It suffered from wonky PCB's. The tape deck looks suspiciously like a Voice of Music model 740 or a close relative. This may be one of the better stereos GE ever built, certainly the fanciest as far as equipment goes.

Is my understanding correct? I thought PORTA-FI means the speakers are detachable, or you can get another set of speakers and place them elsewhere and the signal would travel wirelessly???? Hence the "porta (ble)".

Certainly one of the lowest, if nothing else. GE made some "coffee table" consoles as well, with down firing woofer iirc.

The GE "Porta-FI" was another speaker, and it was wireless. Here's a You-tube link that show's how it works:

And yes, the R to R looks very much like a VM.

He won't get that around here. In California, maybe. Nobody around here works on them. I guarantee that one needs work. If you move the decimal point...... ;)

I would agree that the R2R is a VM unit...but 2000 bucks?... kinda hard to swallow ... unless you are a GE aficionado that just has to have it...I agree move the decimal point over and the price becomes more palatable...

This unit, or at least on like it has been listed for some time, and the price is kind of steep. The MCM cabinet is why they think it's worth a fortune.
