Magnavox model 1MP357R Stereo Theater

This one is nice and it works. The price is reasonable given its condition. Advertised as "top of the line" we know it's not. The 400 series, 27" Theaters were TOTL. I notice an oblong midrange speaker in this instrument, in the sixth picture down. I don't believe I've seen that in a Magnavox in the past. I hope somebody saves this who will appreciate it.

What is the round brass colored item on the
lower left of the cabinet ?

A pilot indicator light perhaps ?

I forget the exact nomenclature, but that device is an eye for the automatic brightness control circuit in the TV. IT allegedly adjusts brightness to room conditions. That little device is often mistaken for remote control. That particular unit does not have remote control, although it was an option on some of the 300 series Stereo Theaters.

That is good looking and looks more like an RCA than a Magnavox. I find it interesting how you never know what you will find in a Magnavox for components. This one being a 1962 is at the end of tubes so did they just use what they had left when it came to the speakers? Or was it I have space for these speakers. My Symphony has 12" woofers and horns and the 100 series turner. Greg's Symphony has 15" woofers, six cone speakers that make up mid's and tweeters and the 200 series tuner. I believe it was decided that mine was a 1962-63 so again the end of tube production.

Magnavox called the automatic brightness system "Magnalux".

It was found on nearly all their console TV sets.

This instrument is at least a 1962 model, maybe a 1963. The '62 brochure says it could have horns along with 12" speakers. No mention of oval speakers. The 1963 brochure is so busy throwing the tube stuff under the bus, it gives very little information. I have always thought this a strange practice, since they were selling the last of the tube stuff along side the new solid state stuff, often sharing cabinets. But we all know Magnavox.......

As far as I know, Magnavox used the vertical chassis configuration on all their console TV sets that used the C36 series chassis. Magnavox went from a hard-wired TV chassis to a PCB design for the 1962 model year. According to the pictures of this instrument, they would produce a sharp, clear picture. I hope mine works as well as this one does.
