Zenith & Sansui

"I'm writing to you on behalf of a friend who has a complete, vintage quad Sansui system that belonged to her recently deceased uncle. She wants to find a new home for it.

She has a large Zenith tube mono hi-fi in a cabinet, with an AM-FM tuner and a "Cobra" record player. I'd guess it's from the early 1950s, prior to the stereo era. This Zenith is in Manistee MI, and my friend will be there this weekend.

The Sansui system is located in Rockport MI, which she says is near Grand Rapids."

I wouldn't have any interest in the Sansui system, but the Zenith should be rescued by somebody. Hmmmm. Manistee is 90 miles SW of TC. Down in Bill's part of the world.......

Actually, Greg, Manistee is about halfway between TC and Hart. So, it could be a race for Chris and me to see who get there first.

Chris's house is starting to look like a hoarder special. I inherited by grandfather's grandfather clock and just moved it into the house (barely). Other stuff got moved aside, sort of. And the garage requires me to turn sideways to traverse the side where the bikes & kayak & console & iceboat live, and to get the Mustang out I have to roll the Maggie Prov. Serenade out first. My shop has narrow aisles these days too. Too much stuff, but it's all cool stuff.

The clock, a mid-20s Colonial, was built in Zeeland, MI of solid mahogany. It lived in Alabama for many years and then returned to MI ca. 1978 when my Mom inherited it. Now it's farther N in Michigan.

My grandfather moved his family into Birmingham's ritziest new suburb in the later 20s by purchasing the model home, a big 20s Tudor. It was furnished. Then came 1929. By 1932 they had lost the house but took the furnishings when they moved downscale. The clock was part of the haul.

So the clock has family history and, therefore, priority.

I love Grandfather clocks, or floor clocks, or any old clock for that matter. I too have my grandparents floor clock; it came from my mother's parents' home and it's a Colonial but in Cherry. It's too bad Colonial went out of business in 1983. I guess changing times and tastes was probably the reason.

It would be nice if one of you kind souls would rescue the little Zenith. I'm not a Zenith fan, but orphans need love, too.

Mine is a 1957 model DN that my Dad built, with its nylon (!!!) sail. The sail was high-tech at the time but they hadn't really thought through the effect of stretch on performance (as wind increases, the sail powers up). So I just head out for the thrill of going fast. Not a competitive rig but still fun.
