Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Took the radio out. Replaced the electrolytic cap in it. Cleaned up the pots and switches. Replaced light bulbs. All speaker channels work now. Still need to do some antenna wire repair to the connector on one of the AM wires (it was snapped off at the connection to the cabinet/antenna coil. Waiting...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

It looks to me like you might have some red-plating 6V6's on the chassis, on top, in your picture. Are the voltages in that stage correct? That might explain part of your performance issues. You don't want to run it long if you do have red plating. You can take out the output transformer(s).... Not...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

With the record changer and radio not working, I decided to plug in a Bluetooth receiver to the tape input. There is still some stuff to address for sure. I know there are still some electrolytic capacitors in the receiver side. As well as at the midrange and tweeter speakers. But…I was able to hear...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Got the last capacitor soldered in, under the power amp chassis. Things at least power up. Will have to dig into the radio side next. Then my daughter has catching up to do,on getting the record changer rebuild done.

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Making headway on restuffing the can capacitor. I elected to only put the three 43uF/400V capacitors inside the can. I will place a 220uF/50V capacitor on the underside of the chassis. Waiting for that capacitor to arrive (I think I found a smaller one that I ordered, which should fit better. I thin...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

I have this as a downloaded PDF file and have printed two complete copies of this service manual. The other handy part is the parts list that also breaks down what each of the parts is as well as most of the ratings of those electronic components (which can be hard to read on the schematic).

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

The schematic is on the opposite page. Between the schematic and the photo “map” has been pretty helpful. I wouldn’t have been able to use the photo for wiring, the photo is much neater than the underside of the actual chassis.

Having both has been pretty helpful.

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Try to imagine the schematic as a road map. The road map that shows how electricity flows thru the chassis. The power plug will be the entry point, then on to a fuse, if any, then on to the primary of the power transformer, with perhaps a small detour for power to the changer. There will be a power...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Where I am at currently. Upon receiving the schematic for the HS 968 amplifier used in this set-up and downloading a guide on how to read schematics, (Yes I’m that person in that stage of trying to understand this whole situation), I am pretty convinced that the current can capacitor is not original...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

As to the filter caps, have you considered restuffing the old cans? You can cut the filter cap cans apart, remove the old guts, then add new caps to the cans, then put the cans back together. I personally would not pay $44 for repop filter caps for a console stereo. I think I still have pictures of...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Another question occurred to me on the record changer. What type of lubricants are used on these after my daughter cleans the dried stuff off. (She has laid claim to restoring the record changer.)

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

With regard to the record changer, here is a picture of the ink stamp on the underside. If I’m understanding the deciphering of the numbers based on what I saw at the Voice of Music website, the record changer is made the 14th week of 1963, and the model number would be a 1242. I know the cartridge ...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Looking into things a bit more over the weekend I sent for an estimate for a “built” canister capacitor from Hayseed Hamfest. Quote comes back at $44. The corner of the chassis where that capacitor mounts, looks a little crowded. So, not sure space wise if replacing it with multiple capacitors under...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Thanks again for the tips. Yes I do wear disposable gloves while cleaning.

I did some looking into capacitor restuffing, and I probably won’t go that route.

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

There might be a member of the forum who has the schematic you need and would share. Failing that, "The Schematic Man" is a good place, but is not free. He has downloads or you can get the original paper manuals. I personally prefer the original paper manuals, lest there be missing inform...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Looks like most of the under-hood capacitors are disc ceramics, which are very durable and will not demand replacement like the more usual wax-and-paper varieties do. Bear in mind that audiophiles take the view that ceramics sound worse than tubular film caps, but you can wait decide if it sounds t...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Best place to find schematics? I had kind of arrived at the same logical conclusion, that I should probably follow the pathway of the current. First though a good cleaning of the interior of the cabinet is needed as well. So, that seemed like a fairly simple place to start before really “digging int...

Re: Roadside p/u Motorola SK80CW (Help needed)

Right now I’m trying to formulate a logical order to go through the unit systematically to ensure I address things in a manner to prevent damage while trying to identify what is good and what has gone bad. In doing some research it seems the record changer is likely made by Voice of Music. I’ll need...
