I just pulled this filthy changer from my Fisher Custom Electra VII, so it can replace a Dual 1010 that the changer spindle will not drop records consistently. I sold my 1967 Fisher to a record aficionado who wanted a reliable record changer. It also matched the dining room furniture, and that sold it. I offered 3 Garrard alternatives to the Dual and he picked the AT6. I will need to trace and produce a plinth so the Garrard can drop into the Dual's opening.

This changer was likely sold with a Pickering V15-II magnetic cartridge, but has on it a very odd looking Ortofon (?) looking cart that is pyramid shaped all white, no label. There was also an Empire 5000 that appeared used.

I first decided to open the motor. The 3 mounts to the pan were still very pliable and not shrunken plus the idler wheel looked and felt fine, no parts needed Only two small brass nuts had to be removed to access the bearings and armature on the "laboratory balanced" motor. Lubed with turbine oil, it responded superbly by spinning for 13 seconds after power was removed. Easiest motor I ever did! Normally a Mag, V-M or RCA Alliance motor spins 6 seconds. The speed control was pretty simple too, making it easy to lube.

The record stabilizer arm is like a Magnavox, NOT connected to the changer mechanism to confirm a record drops like an RCA or VM. I had to pull off a c-clip to get it out and clean and lube it, binding here is bad for good changer operation. The platter bearing was also like any other and filled with dark semi-hard grease. I used the standard "phono lube" which is lithium-based white grease, AKA Lubri-plate.

Unbelievably, the cycle wheel did not require me to pull apart more than a c-clip! It was easily cleaned and restored to operate the tonearm, however simple. Next, I will see how the electrical function is. I hope my luck doesn't run out and I have to transplant the Pickering cart from the Dual.
