Scottsdale gets hammered by storms

When we get a tenth of an inch of rain here, all the TV stations position reporters near known water puddles. Slashing thru water is a big deal around here. Last evening and this morning, Scottsdale got 3.66 inches of rain. Streets are rivers, dry washes are running full. They say that over a thousand trees are down. All kinds of stalled, soggy cars. No reports of injuries or worse, thank God. We have a "stupid motorist" law so that if you drive into a flooded area and get stuck, you may have to pay for the rescue effort. I'm sure several motorists had to make a contribution in that regard.

We've had over 10 in. this month in Binghamton, 4th highest ever for July and gunning for the record of 12 in. with a week left and some PM T-storms (typical here in summer) predicted.

We got it here last evening and up until about two hours ago. I thought this place was gonna float away. We got a little over three inches, which is a lot of rain around here. All the common areas have about six feet of water in them. I moved the Buick this afternoon between showers. I got a chance to get a storage locker about a mile from here, a brand new one. I drove about twenty miles south of here to go to a laundromat with washers and dryers large enough to handle the two car covers I use. Their power was out, so I wasted my time and the trip. There were two accidents I saw on the way there. A little SUV of some kind hit standing water, went airborne, and landed on it's top in a field. Further down the road, a white Toyota hit a puddle, then landed on its top in the ditch filled with water. The ground around here soaks up water like a sponge. Two hours after it quits raining, the temp starts going up, along with the humidity, and the water puddles disappear. If we don't get more rain, they'll be making dust when they are doing excavation work for new houses in a day or two.

We've gotten a lot of rain here this summer. It just keeps flowing up off the gulf. I have a guy do my lawn and he broke his lawnmower this weekend, the grass had gotten so tall in the 2 week interval between cuttings. His weedeater can't get through it without great effort.

I'm back in the land of internet connection. I was driving downstate Friday evening and when I was 100 mi. south of home I remembered that I had not rolled the '56 Provincial Serenade back into the garage after backing the Mustang out. It lives behind the car. I called a friend and had him throw a tarp over it because the forecast was for rain. By Sat. morning I was getting flash flood alerts on my cell phone and emergency warnings on pubic radio. Just checked the rain gauge--3.9". That's serious rain around here. I get e-mailed articles from the U-M.One of them showed a graph of rainfall this summer as measured locally near Ann Arbor. They were under average rainfall for the season but one huge downpour in July. Apparently these huge events are a feature of climate change.

The climate seems to change each year. 3 years ago my lawn nearly all died from the drought conditions we were having this time of year.

In central Michigan... this summer... it is in the 80's and 90's hot and humid or it is monsoon rains... I will say the crops in my area look excellent... we always go by the standard for corn... knee high by 4th of july.... not this year... it was over waist high by 4th of july...

We got an haboob last evening. Instead of getting rain with a windstorm, we get dust. It had weakened considerably by the time it got to our place. It only lasted about ten minutes here, and we could still see the road in front of the house. If it should happen to rain during or after an haboob, we get mud from the sky.
