Classic Hifi Care

I REALLY like this thing. It doesn't work, so I'm told. The condition is nice, but the price is fairly optimistic. Maybe $25 on a good day, not knowing the condition of the picture tube.

It has miniature tubes, so it is newer than 1946. I haven't figured out the FM dial yet. I'm guessing the TV tuner works with the FM tuner somehow. Maybe one of the guys more familiar with TV can advise us there. This thing was REALLY high end when it was new. I have a soft spot for S-C stuff. Built like a Mack truck. I'd love to have that thing, but space is my limiting factor right now. And the seller may have convinced himself that it is worth a fortune, so buying it for a reasonable price might be a challenge. This is how old TV's get repurposed. The seller sets an unreasonable price and collectors won't pay up.

And in cases like this collectors shouldn't pay up. Good luck to them.

They won't get $2500 for this thing if they wait three lifetimes. Collectors are not going to pay that much, given the picture tube condition is unknown and the fact it would cost a fortune to go thru it. There is a very limited market for something like this. The interior designers that like stuff like this for decorating doodads won't want it because of its size. And the thing has got to be HEAVY! The fate of this fine specimen is not good unless somebody is willing to be reasonable and come together on the price. It is unique and it is rare, but that does not make it valuable.

If I had the room and if the price was right, I could make this thing a plant stand, pending finding another picture tube if it came to that. There does not appear to be a lot of the fuzz on the picture tube you see when a set has high hours on it. The picture tube might be fine. The metal cone picture tubes are reputed to have gone to air more likely than not.

The current FM band was between channels 6 and 7 of the VHF TV band. Tht made it easy to build a unit that tuned VHF TV and the FM broadcast band. I had a DuMont TV/radio console that had continuous tuning; I think there was a switch that turned off the video circuits but I bet it used the same RF and IF sections.

Looking closer at the picture... the tube has a picture on it ... although it looks weak in the photo , there is a picture on it...so the CRT sorta works

I see that now you mentioned it. That would make it worth $50 on a good day. It will still need a five-gallon bucket of caps changed before it will be dependable. It's quite the rig in any case. I hope it gets a good home.

Is that a picture or a reflection? Hard to tell.

I looked more than once and wouldn't bet either way. I was told the instrument "doesn't work", whatever that means. They did not elaborate on just what, specifically, did not work.
