Classic Hifi Care

Here's 2 likely candidates. The late 60s to '70s plastic molding and pressed wood Mediterranean era seem to be particularly fertile ground, and I've seen even worse than these out there, so post your own!

I second the motion. No redeeming virtues, at least in the style category.

In ten years, there will be somebody posting on this very forum about acquiring a console like those pictured. Those plastic and particleboard consoles will be all that's left not in the hands of collectors, or had been broken up for parts. Any of them are better than the currently-produced Chinese record players. I can remember a time when you would get your head handed to you saying something good about a console stereo on the big forum. Then somebody discovered a Magnavox Concert Grand with 16 6V6's and those guys went crazy. Those consoles are not my cup of tea, but some of them perform well.

I only put this up because my grandparents had one and it was the strangest electromechanical device ever. i remember my grandmother getting on the floor to use it and she never ever was on the floor. It hung out for a couple of years in the small subdivision ranch style house with a gold sculpted carpet and a hanging partition wall. We had many great holidays there. Even though it looks gaudy now, at the time it was fine. In the driveway at the time was his 73 plymouth satellite (huge wedge shaped car) and her 70 Chevy nova 4 door.

Yes I'd bet they could perform just fine, but it's strictly about looks... yuk! Anyone who wants to save one, be my guest.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. They are not very attractive nor desirable at this time. Remember when you couldn't give away a four door sedan or station wagon in the old car market? Now, anything that runs is worth $10,000. All the convertibles and two door hardtops are long gone. The point I was feebly trying to make was that tastes change. One man's trash is another man's treasure. And, like you, I'll let one of these consoles be somebody else's treasure........

Nope... I didn't like the '70s the first time I lived through them. Cars, clothes, colors and consoles all yuck...

Hydro: that exact same model is for sale right now back home (I'm in Denver until mid-Dec) for $30! It's downright tasteful compared to these others.

Here's another contender, can you believe this PA nutcase is asking $4000 for this hideous POS?!!

Does it come with a free copy of the "Shaft" soundtrack?

It's not just the bad taste of the designs, it's the palpable cheapness of the product. All that plastic and fake woodgrain. It just screams "cheap."

How in the world do some of these sellers come up with such insane prices?? 3200 for the one Greg posted, $4000 for the one with what looks like dyed sheep's wool in the speaker compartments?? eBay must feed the ranks of the willing delusional, if that's where it's originating. Send out the men in white jackets please!!

I have an R204 chassis I have been trying to give away with no takers. I'm not going to toss it. SOMEDAY, SOMEBODY will need it. Spoken like a true hoarder, huh?

I have a friend who has a Zenith plastic and particle board special sitting on orange shag carpet, just for effect. No kidding.......
