Sheila Jordan, a jazz singer whom I did not know (Will Rogers said that "We are all ignorant, just on different subjects") died at 96 and got a write-up in the NYT. It included a video link to a 2011 performance in Detroit. Wow, she was good, and watch how much fun the other musicians are having:

Also note the Ford sponsorship. Ford, the family and the company, have stuck by Detroit. I don't usually get warm and fuzzy feelings for corporations, but Google "Michigan Central station" and read about a recent very big project. It's why I tried really hard to buy a new Ranger.

Also note that the concert was in Orchestra Hall, built in 1919 for the Detroit Symphony. Wikipedia reminds me: "Orchestra Hall sat vacant for nearly twenty years until the late 1960s when it was slated for demolition and the land used to construct a restaurant. Paul Ganson, the assistant principal bassoonist of the DSO, spearheaded a movement to rediscover the hall and raise funds to restore it. Renovation work started in 1970 and continued for about two decades, costing roughly $6.8 million." It's a testament to one person's ability to do important things, kinda like Isaac Stern stepping in to save Carnegie Hall.
