Ortofon 2M Blue phono cartridge

Post: # 26029Post electra225 »

Does anybody know anything about this cartridge, ever had any personal experience with one? I've thought about buying a "premium" cartridge for one of my turntables just to see if truly sounded any better than a Stanton 500 that I like so well. Anybody?

All I can tell you is my friend Jim, the guy that engineered for Charbonneau speaker, thought highly of that brand. Looking over all of his stuff since his passing a year ago, he had a lot of Ortofon products around his house.

I am away from my magazine collections for the weekend, but going by memory, they are solid devices.

What superior performance characteristics, if any, would this cartridge exhibit versus the Stanton 500?

Maybe better HF response? From what I've read, stylus shape influences performance for different purposes. The various eliptical-and-beyond line-contact shapes may be better on new or very clean discs but other shapes may be better for well-used records. I'm no expert, just reciting things I've read.

The Amazon reviews are mostly good. There are lots of posts on Audiokarma about it. I think I might have a Ortofon cartridge or two around here but I'm almost certain that none are the blue.

An Ortofon cartridge is not something one would expect to find in a console stereo, so we probably wouldn't talk about one much on this forum. I have had no interest in something like this in the past, but thought maybe I'd like to try one and see for myself. To my ears, it will be hard to be the Stanton 500..... ;) ;)
