Oklahoma!

When I was a kid and got old enough, I was allowed to play records on the parents' Magnavox. They had LPs of several of the classic musicals. The best were Rodgers & Hammerstein: Oklahoma! and South Pacific. I've never lost my fondness for those.

Now I'm listening to a 2022 recording of the complete score of Oklahoma!, all of the music, all of the songs, every note and word they wrote for the show on 2 CDs. It's remarkable music.

The show opened in New York in March,1943, and by late 1943 a touring company opened in Chicago. My parents both lived there and were dating and they went to Oklahoma! on Christmas eve, 1943. It seems to have had an effect: my mother broke off an engagement to a man back in Birmingham and married Dad instead.

Oklahoma, South Pacific, The Sound of Music and White Christmas are my favorite musicals, not in any particular order. They are each special in their own way. The talent simply doesn't exist to equal the quality and interest in those musicals. I have Oklahoma and The Sound of Music sound tracks on records.

I too like all of the about mentioned musicals and several others too. I have either VCR tapes or DVD's of several musicals and enjoy watching them occasionally.
