Fixing parts sets

I have/had the bad habit of buying a lot of radios "for parts" at auction, then ending up fixing most of them. I figure I need to know what parts are good, right? How can I know if they are good, for sure, unless I see them in operation? Then, when the item works, it goes into either restoration or on the shelf. I accumulate more clutter and still don't have any parts. Do any of you guys do this?

What I buy is usually something that I want, and want to restore for myself. For me, if I did what you do, it would be a record player not a radio.

I probably should have said "electronics" not necessarily radios. By the way, do you remember the guy at New River who had that test equipment for sale, probably for the last four or five years? The guy who is almost impossible to get ahold of? Yeah, THAT guy. He still has stuff for sale. I may make another effort at trying to get with him. He still has some stuff I can use.

So far, no. Why the guy takes the time to post things for sale, then doesn't want to sell them is beyond me. Maybe to keep his wife off him? "I'm trying to sell it, honey" type thing.......

Now he has some stereo equipment listed. I see a VTVM in the picture. The guy may have some interesting things if I can ever get ahold of him.

Count me in the group. I am a sucker for the orphans that nobody else wants. Then it's a challenge to fix 'em up. My view is that these objects are in limited supply, and if one is repairable, it seems a shame to destroy it "for parts." If it can be salvaged, it should be. If it really can't be because major components are missing, well, maybe it is a "parts set."
