Classic Hifi Care

Hi from Grapevine, Texas. I recently recovered a 2-part Magnavox console and had it refurbished at Dallas Vintage Audio. It sounds fabulous but the lid stay does not keep the lid open. Was hoping to find out year it was made and model information so I can search for a replacement. In the meantime I have a stick (ha ha) propping it open when I play my vinyl. I welcome suggestions!

As to your question, we will need more information. Pictures will certainly help. Some of the older Magnavox stereos used a friction type of mechanism to hold the lid up that has proven to be cranky in their old age. I am not aware of new replacements being available. Sometimes they can be adjusted thru a hole in the back of the cabinet, sometimes not. Sometimes, you can remove the mechanism and repair it. It varies on a case by case basis. Perhaps some of the other members may have ideas as well. I have a friction mechanism in my Imperial stereo and I use a paint stick to hold the lid up. Mine is not repairable.

Welcome, and yes to everything Electra 225 said. I too have an Imperial and need to use a paint stick to hold my lid up. There is a spring thing in the support mechanism that has an adjusting screw in the back of our Imperials. When I tried adjusting mine the spring broke. If you follow Electra 225's instructions you will then be able to provide us with some photos which will help us to identify your Magnavox. Again, welcome, we are glad you found us.

First, thank you for completing the required steps to become a member and thank you for providing your Avatar, now we know which Magnavox you have.

And that Magnavox is called the Modern Concerto. If it is phono only, it is model number 1-SP280F. If yours has the tuner it is model 1-SP281F. A few more posts from you and you will be able to view the "Downloads" where you will find the "Brochures and Catalog" section and in there you will find lots of Magnavox brochures and catalogs that will show you the different models including yours.

It is always nice to find original parts, but if you cannot, woodworkers' supply places offer a variety of lid supports.

If neither of those has what you want, do a search on "woodworkers' supplies" and try some of the others. Or try McMaster-Carr.
