RCA Victor VGT-90W newbie restoration

Trying to find information about my project.

It's a Solid State RCA Victor Model VGT90W console from 1965 ("G" designation?) with a S/N of 60 4130. It is a "New Vista" but I’m trying to identify the cabinet styles. Dimensions are 62.5” x 19.5” x 25” tall. I have stumbled on pics of consoles sharing the Tuner/TT layout but nothing that has the eight speaker layout (which another member states makes it a deluxe unit)

Everything powers up and functions and since this is my first foray into electronics repair I started with baby steps replacing only the two 1500 caps in the power supply. The unit still has the “hum” so I’m planning on diving in deeper and a complete cleaning/refurb of the TT.

Any additional information or tricks of the trade are appreciated.

I see you already posted under RCA, I guess I am late as usual to the party. ;) :)

Right now, I cannot remember if my RCA home theater has filter caps in the tuner/preamp/amp or not. If it is like mine, the actual output transistors are located in that assemble so there may be a filter cap there too.

I believe the record changer will be a variant of
the RCA RP-218, which I had added in the downloads section.

When you pull the changer, there should be a model #
on the underside of the changer base.

Does it hum on all functions?... could be a flaky ground ... flip the power cord outlet plug , and see if that helps...

Finally tried the plug trick - no improvement.

I was able to identify the cabinet through on of the FB console groups I joined. Sorry for the poor quality pic but it's all I have. Was also able to obtain the correct Service Manuals from YouTube's Steve Scarlet.

Appreciate all the information and tips received.

It is important to know whether the hum is there all the time. If so and if on all functions, you may need to look at the filter caps in the power supply.

Most likely the caps are dried up...but the power supply shows what looks like replacements already the hold down clamps are there but empty... it is definitely worth the time to re-cap it .. looks like one of RCA's better units

It is definitely one of RCA's better units and is actually next to the top of the line that was built in that era.

I looked at the Date Codes on the various components. Looks like your unit was built in early 1966.

Hi 👋🏻
How is your restoration going?? I just acquired the exact same unit. Trying to decide a game plan. It was my wife’s grandparents. [image][image][/image][/image]
