This is the V-M 954 changer from the AMC hi-fi I posted about.
The original idler wheel is good as are the 45 and 78 RPM
speed turrets.
The 33 RPM turret has two dings that make it unusable,
due to the noise it generates when engaging the motor
spindle.
These speed turret motors were used in G.I. and Alliance
motors in the V-M 900 changer series up to 1955,
when the V-M 1200 came out.
I've used thick O-rings to replace the rubber on
bad idler wheels.
So, I wondered what I could do to replace the rubber on
this speed turret ?
I removed the old rubber off the turret
I cut a rubber motor mount in half, and it partially functioned.
The speed was a bit slow, though.
I figured the rubber was too spongy and also did not have
enough solid surface area to engage the motor spindle well.
I found a flat sided grommet today at the local small hardware store
that looked very promising.
I used a new sharp safety razor blade and cut the grommet down
its center line.
It fit well on the turret's metal body, so I put the turret back
on the motor board and gave it a whirl.
That grommet works beautifully, and the speed is right.
I'll apply a bit of glue to secure it well on the turret body.
The grommet is OD 0.5 inch x ID 0.25 inch.
You can save the other half of the grommet to use on
another turret if needed.
